However if you research the facts instead of the opinions you might find that the programs and peripherals you cherish will run on High Sierra, as just about anything should although Apple can be arbitrarily obnoxious about legacy support compared to Microsoft. Some of us horde these things for no apparent reason and some do not, like old Windows installation media. You would need to have the installation media for an older OS which Apple deletes from its servers with each new OS release or upgrade. You can follow Bent's advice but I think you would be wrong.
